It is with a great deal of sadness, that we announce the passing of Dave Merkel, who along with his wife Sue, founded Berrien Buggy. Dave was well known within the dune buggy community, and contributed greatly to the buggy culture.
Dave began Berrien Buggy with $75.00 and an old Volkswagen beetle in 1968, in his one car garage. From that small beginning he grew the company to include parts sales, chassis design and development, an off road race team, and the production of fiberglass dune buggy bodies, frames and accessories. His knowledge of and dedication to the buggy community has helped thousands of customers enjoy the sport over a 43 year period.
Dave was a soft spoken man with a humble manner. He always had a warm smile and handshake for his customers and friends. He had a deep and abiding faith, and strove to be as Christ like as he could in his everyday life. His honesty and integrity made him a stalwart in the industry. His passing is a loss that affects the entire dune buggy community, and he will be greatly missed.
The thoughts and prayers of all of us here at Acme are with the Merkel family as they deal with the loss of Dave. We offer our condolences but we know mere words will never fill the void in your hearts.
Farewell Dave, till we all meet again.
